Powells Garage will close its doors for the final time on 15 December
Powells Garage will close its doors for the final time on 15 December. The garage site has been acquired by the South West Ambulance Trust which will take occupancy from that date.
Powells Garage was first established shortly after the Second World War in 1953 by the brothers Reg and Raymond Powell. The family business operated from the Agar Road site, opposite Morrisons, 67 years before relocating to Barncoose ten years ago.
The Powell family and their skilled and dedicated team have worked tirelessly over the years to provide the best possible service to thousands of customers using Powells as their local garage of choice. Their hard work has been recognised nationally with multiple awards and commendations over the years.
After a long and fulfilling career, Heather and Kenneth Powell, the senior directors, have made the difficult decision to retire from the business. Their sons, Jon and Tom Powell, have decided not to take up the reins at Powells Garage because they have other interests they wish to pursue. They recognise that, with the recent arrival of the fully electric and hybrid motor car, the motor trade industry is preparing for a massive shift in a different direction. That means the future role for the independent service garage will likewise have to change to accommodate the new technology.
Emotions are very mixed – sadness, certainly, because this is the end of an era for the Powell family business. Yet there is a sense of keen anticipation for the time ahead and for what the future holds. Ken and Heather plan to move on with their respective lives in active retirement outside of the motor trade.
The Powell family cannot say goodbye without expressing their huge appreciation and thanks to their hardworking team who made it all possible; and to the local people who have supported the family garage business over the last 67 years. Many of them have become friends and will definitely be missed.
Finally, the Powell family would like to sincerely wish all of their staff, customers and suppliers all the very best for the future.
